HEAVY TEXTILES

The trade section reports, presented at the annual meeting to-day of the British (U.KJ Manufacturers' Association of New Zealand, contain the following reference to the heavy textiles industries here and at Home:—"The attitude of the British manufacturer and his agent towards the New Zealand manufacturer is a question of increasing importance. One cannot but realise that there are industries for which New Zealand is peculiarly well adapted, and that it is unreasonable to adopt an aggressive attitude towards them In the case of. such industries, it should surely be the object of the representatives or British manufacturers to endeavoui- to meet the requirements of the New Zealand manufacturer by supplying him with the raw materials for his industry, when these are not produced locally. But it should surely be equally the aim of the jNew Zealand manufacturer to endeavour to purchase whenever he can from the Mother Country. If is pleasing to gather from public utterances that the New Zealand manufacturer in general is imbued with this ideal, and is doing his best to put it into practical execution. It is clearly the duty of the agents for British manufacturers to encourage this attitude and to place their relations with loeai industries on a sound and enduring basis pt friendship attained through common interests."
