THE CROSSBREDS POSITION

Cablegrams received in Wellington showing the state of the market as determined by the London November series of sales are as under: — ' The Bank or New Zealand (produce department) has received the following advice from its London office under date :4th December: —"The sales have closed firm for all kinds of wool. Current quotations: Merino, super 16% dto 18d per lb, ordinary 14d to lad, inferior lid to 12Hd; halfbred, 15% dto 17d; crossbred, fine 14% dto 15% d, medium 13% dto 14d, coarse 13d to 139 id. "MARKET IS STEADY." ■ Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated 4th December:—"The auctions closed here to-day. The market is steady. As compared with the opening rates, we quote: Greasy merino., best unchanged, average VzA per lb lower; fine ihalfbreds 50/56's, halfbreds 48/50's, fine : crossbreds 46/48's, medium 44/46'5,-coarse 40/44's, low 36/40's, all unchanged. Scoured . merinos, scoured crossbreds, and slipe clothing 2% per cent, lower; slipes combing 5 per cent, lower. CONTINENTAL PURCHASES. ; Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and .Co., Ltd., lave in receipt of the following wool market ; cablegram from their London agents, 'dated 4th. December:—"Sales have closed. Continental buyers principal operators. Compared with present London sales 'opening rates, Merino fine competition •keen, market shows no material change. !Greasy merino, other descriptions, declined 5 per cent; competition irregular. ■Lambs, merino greasy, market firm, shows ;a hardening tendency; scoured merino, finest descriptions, small demand; niarket irregular, declined 7% per cent. Crossbred greasy, fine, medium, and coarse ■market fine. Crossbred, scoured, except coarse descriptions, declined 5 to 7% per cent. Slipe crossbred lambs, best descriptions, market firm; other descriptions declined 5 to 7% per cent. Slipe cross--bred, market shows no change." ACTIVE COMPETITION. New .. Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, Company, Limited, have received the following advice from their London house, dated 4th December: "Wool: Sales ■closed: As compared with last sales closing rates prices are higher about 5 per jcent. for crossbred lambs, medium and inferior greasy merino, and greasy crossbred; prices are higher about par to 5 :per cent, for scoured crossbred and medium and coarse crossbred slipe; prices are higher about 7% to 10 per cent, for greasy merino-super, and for merino lambs prices are about the same. Market is weaker for fine crossbred slipe and scoured merino. Competition by both home and foreign buyers is fairly active. The prices realised for average to super grades of description as below were as follows: — Merino, super 16d to 18d, average 12% d to 14% d; crossbred, 56-58's 16Msd to 18% d, 50/56's lu'/zd to 17d, 48-50's 14d to 15& d, 46-48's 13% dto 14% d, 44-46's 13% d to 14d, 40-44's 13d to 13% d, 3640's 13d to 13% d. • BUYERS' QRDERS FILLED. Messrs. Dalgety and Co., London, cabling 4th December, advise:—"Wool sales closed fairly active, with fair competition. Last week's prices . barely maintained, many buyers haying filled their orders. As compared with closing rates of last series, greasy merino %d to l%d higher, scoured merino 2d to 3d higher, greasy halfbred Id to l%d higher, greasy fine crossbred' %d to Id higher, greasy; medium crossbred %d to %d higher, greasy coarse crossbred %d to %d higher, scoured crossbred Id to l%"d higher, fine slipes Id to l%d lower, other; slipes %d to Id lower; lambs, crossbred, par to rather lower. There were offered 126,465 bales, of which the Continent bought 59,500 bales, home trade 48,500, carried forward 30,000, of which 19,500 were hot offered. The total sold was 108,000 bales. The following is the range of prices:—Merino, good to super, 15Vfcd to 18d; low to medium, 12d to 15d. Halfbred, 56 to 58, good to super, l"d to 18% d; low to medium, 13% dto 16Hd. Halfbred, 50 to 56, good to super, 16d to 17% d; low to medium, 13d to ISVad. Fine crossbred, 48 to 50, good to super, 149 id to 16d; low to medium, 12Vid to 14% d. Fine crossbred, 46 to 48, good to super 14% dto 15% d; low to medium, 12d to 14d. Crossbred, 44 to 46, good to super, 133 id to 14% d; low to medium, ll%d to 13% d. Crossbred, 40 to 44, good to super, 13% dto 14% d; low to medium, ll%d to 13% d. Coarse crossbred, 36 to 40, good to super, 13% dto 14d; medium to good, lid to-13d."
