ANTARCTIC LANDS

AMERICA'S RIGHTS

BRITISH CLAIM RIDICULED

LONDON, 2nd December. The Washington newspaper, the "Washington P.ost," editorially declares that Byrd's Polar flight has strengthened the United States's claim to tho Antarctic. It says that the British claims to it were based on nothing but impudence and effrontery. It pointed out that Lieutenant Wilkes, of the United States Navy, discovered the Antarctic in December, 1839, whereas tho Britisher, Captain Ross, did not see land prior to 1840. The newspaper contends that Byrd's Expedition is more practical. "He has discovered new lands, and claimed them and occupied them for the United States."
