PROPOSED ABOLITION
BRITISH HINT TO NANKING
British Official Wireless.
(Keceived 3rd December, 11 a.m.)
EUGBY, 2nd December.
Mr. A. Henderson^Foreign Secretary, replying to the question, said that the Chinese Government had announced its intention to abolish extraterritoriality on Ist January next. The Chinese Government was aware of Britain's desire to enter into negotiations on the subject in a liberal and friendly spirit, and that the British Minister in Pekin was endeavouring to initiate discussions. The Chinese Minister had been mtormed that a denunciation of the extraterritoriality clauses of Treaties would prejudice the prospect of a satisfactory jssue. "The Chinese Government will doubtless give weight to those considerations, and I hope that in the circumstances they will not in fact carry their declared intention into execution."
