JUNIOR RED CEOSS
BEAUTIFUL PORTFOLIOS
A very fine effort towards international friendship is made each year by the promoters of the Junior Red Cross, and should have a definite place in the estimation of people of all the countries where the beautiful symbol is known and respected. This effort comprises the getting together of many portfolios from the New Zealand schools, and packing and forwarding them to schools in other lands. The portfolios, which have been sent in this year, are well worth seeing, as they represent talent and effort above the ordinary. Wellington Girls' College has secured first prize with a very fine collection of. pictures, original drawings, poetry arid'stories, information about the country, and welldrawn maps, cleverly .filled in with postage stamps. Line, work, cubist drawings, coloured designs, and needlework, with cooking recipes (to give domestic interest), and many other points of special New Zealand interest abound in the portfolio, which is intended to be sent to, Japan. It should give immense pleasure to the recipients. Archern'eld College (Dunedin), which usually gets a high place, is second in the decisions, and shows excellent work also, being rather specially patriotic to Otago, showing many of its beauties, as well as good original work. This book will be sent to Holland. The Sacred Heart College (Lower Hutt), and St. Mary's -Diocesan School (Stratford), with excellent contributions, have tied for third place and their books will go to America and Japan -respectively. Outstandingly good .work is shown in the three portfolios that have been sent in from the Girls' High School, Christchurch■ those will bo sent to Canada, Italy and Japan. St. Hilda's School (Dunedm) sent in another good effort, and Columba College (Dunedin) as part of its book contribute a page with beau-tifully-made miniature Karitane garments, and-specially good, well-chosen photographs. Albany Street School (Dunedin) Hind Tinwald, both supplied good work, and from the North Beikiorangi, Oakura (Taranaki), and Waitara, each provided capital portfolios, winch should bring a good response from South Africa, whence their efforts will be. forwarded, Mr Frank Hurley (of the Peace-time Committee) gave the prize to; .the /winning portfolio, and was- judge-bf the work.
