PARALYSED MAN'S ORDEAL

Unable to move or to make himself heard, Thomas Smith, C 7, a bedridden aud paralysed man, had a terrible experience when fire broke out in his room at Crondall street,. Hoxton, London. Smith was alone in a top room, his wife- haying gone out shopping, when the curtains around the mantelpiece caught alight. The flames -were spreading towards his bed, when Mrs. Jordan, who lives below, noticed smoke pouring from the top window, and realised Smith's peril. She rushed up aud reached the door of his room, but was beaten back by smoko and flames. She called P.O. 229, a young constable, who was passing, and he ran into the blazing room and carried Smith to safety. Smith was afterwards taken to St. Leonard's Hospital, Hoxton, in a critical condition from burns.
