NOVEMBER'S WEATHER

COOL AND CLOUDY

November's rainfall, as far as Wellington is concerned, was about normal, thanks to tho cyclonic visitation during the last few days. Up to the 25th of the month it had been abnormally dry, only 73 points of rain being recorded. Last week's downpour, however, brought up the month's total to 330 points. Abnormal rain, 18 points in seven minutes, fell on the 27th between 1.53 p.m. and 2 p.m. On tho evening of the 27th there was a slight thunderstorm, the only one recorded during the month. The highest rainfall during any 24 hours was 126 points for the period ending S a.m. on tho

The month was distinctly a cloudy one, although so dry for the greater part. Hours of sunshine numbered only 1/1, as against a November average of Tho cloud average at 9 a.m. was 8.2 tenths, the normal for November being 5.4 tenths. Owing to the comparative absence of sunshine, temperatures were lower than usual. The mean maximum temperature was 60.3 degrees, three degrees lower than the average. The mean minimum temperature was 50.4 degrees, which approximates the average. The coolness was due to the low day temperatures. There was a cold spell between the Bth and 12th, when the screened thermometer fell to 41 degrees and that on the grass to 33.2 degrees. Another cold snap on tho 16th gave a screened reading of 35.9 degrees and a grass one of 35.1 a strong northerly wind on this occasion accounting for the small difference between the two readings. November made up in wind what .previous months had lacked, and in this respect w:is very typical of a spring month in Wellington. The daily average run of wind was '294' miles, the normal being 278 miles. Northerly gales blow on tho sth, 6th, and 18th, jand strong northerlies on the 15th and 30th. The strongest southerly was on the 10th. .

Barometric pressure remained low throughout the month. The mean for the month was 29.706 inches, whereas the average for November is 29.867 inches.
