HUTT RAILWAY SHOPS' DANCE

Since the opening of the social hall at the new Hutt Valley Railway Workshops an enthusiastic social committee has held several enjoyable dances. A plain and fancy dress carnival dance held recently was considered the most successful and enjoyable yet held, and notwithstanding the wet night, there was a large attendance, including many visitors from Wellington. The lighting effects carried out by the staff made a striking display. The dance was arranged to provide funds for a free Christmas tree for the' children at a function to be held next month. The committee hopes to provide free gifts to the children of all the workshops employees. The judges for the. best fancy dress costume were Mesdames- Walworth, Burton, and O'Shea. Miss Leila Astwood (Spanish lady) was awarded first prize, and Miss Lena Steffensen (Egyptian costume) second. The Misses Strickland (2) (Page and Marionette) received consolation prizes. The music, supplied by the Shops Radio Orchestra, was a feature of the evening, and contributed much to tho enjoyment of all present. Maquire, B. M'Farlane, N. H. Jersen, and E. G. Haneox, the first-named two officially carying out the duties of M.C.'s. Musical items by Miss Harris and the Melody Four (Messrs. S. Duncan, S.
