Sir William Noble left for Auckland by last night's Limited express.
Mr. Justice Ostler leaves "Wellington on Wednesday to preside at the quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court at Blenheim, and Nelson.
Mr. M. Dennehy, Assistant General Manager of Railways, has returned from a business visit to the Taranaki district.
On his return from a two years' tour of the world Mr. J. B. Dagger, M.Sc. has been appointed science master at the Waitaki Boys' High School.
Mr. W. J. Wakelin, of the Christchurch branch of the Labour Department, has been appointed officer in charge of the "Wellington district office. He will leave for Wellington early in December.
Mr. E. O. Parnell who for many years has been attached to' the Shell Company's staff, has acceoted an appointment in Havana. Cuba, and leaves New Zealand in the New Year. Before sailing, Mr. Parnell, who has relations in Havana, is touring New Zealand.
The Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, who is a vice-president of the Royal Show Society, will attend the annual show, to be held at Invercargill this year. Mr. Troup will leave Wellington on 9th December, and will return on 16th December. ,
Mr. J. H. Robertson, formerly Official Assignee in .bankruptcy at Hamilton, has succeeded Mr. A. W. Wattera as Official Assignee in Christchureh, and took up his duties on Thursday.
Among the passengers who arrived in Wellington by the Makura this morning were Mr. and Mrs. E. Riddiford and their little daughter, who have just returned from the Old Country, having been absent for eight or nine months.
Professor Hugh Stewart, formerly Professor of Glassies at Canterbury College, and since 1926 Professor of Latin at the University of Leeds, has been, appointed principal of tho University College at Nottingham. Professor Stewart was elected to the chair of classics at Canterbury College in 1912, succeeding Professor F. W. Haslam. Ho was born in 1884, and was educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh University, and Trinity College, Cambridge, of which he was a foundation scholar. In 1907 ho graduated B.A. with first-class .honours in division IL of the classical tripos. After a short period of teaching a-; Kugby School he became assistant lecturer and lecturer in the University of Liverpool, and at this period published a considerable number of his writings on classical and other subjects. Professor Stewart left Canterbury College at tho outbreak of the Great "War, and till December, 1919, served with great distinction on Gallipoli and in Franco and Flanders. From March, 1916, to November, 1918, he commanded the Second Battalion of the Canterbury Eegiment. He was twice wounded, and won the following honours: C.M.G., D.S.O. (with bar), M.C., Croix de Guerre (with palm), and four mentions in dispatches. At the end of the war he was for a short time Director of Education in the N.Z.E.F., anfi on his return became hon. A.D.C. to the Governor-General of New Zealand. He was for two years Dominion president as well as president of the Christehurch branch of the E.S.A. He left Canterbury College in 1926 to occupy tbe chair of Latin in the University of Leeds, whence he now moves to his new appointment at Nottingham.
