PETONE ROSE SHOW
The Petone Horticultural Society's Eose Show was opened this afternoon by the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Kenzie). The society is to be congratulated on an excellent ' showing of both roses and sweet peas. Naturally, with a young society, the exhibition is not a large one, but the quality of the blooms was as good as may be seen at any of the larger shows.
The championship bloom in tho show was an almost perfect specimen of "Una Wallace," and was shown by Mr. J. ■Ball, of Lower Hutt. The decorated section was very fine, and the competion for decorated tables was very [keen. The judge, Mr. G. A. Chapman, who himself had a very fine exhibit of spinea blooma, pointed out, especially to young exhibitors, the necessity of carefully classing their exhibits, many excellent exhibits being spoilt from a technical point of view by staging two kinds of flowers in one class. Instances were a class for pansies in which violas were mixed.
A special feature of the show is a fine collection of vegetables by Mr. F. Westbury.
The show, which will be continued this evening, is weir worthy of a visit.
