AWAPUNI TEACK NOTES
SILVER PAPER AND ASPIRING
GO WELL
(By Telegraph.)
(SpMlal to "The Evening Post.")
PALMERSTON N., This Day.
The dust was flying at Awapuni yesterday morning and rain is urgently needed. The hardness of the tracks has compelled G..New to take Princess Betty and Jayson into temporary quarters at Wopdvilfe. Rain made its appearapre after breakfast, but it did little more than settle the dust.
With the focal centre furnishing a big string ot horses for Feilding and Woodville lii the near future, the track conditions are rather' limiting the operations of trainers and all the fast work attempted yesterday morning was carried out on the plough.
Awapuni supplies three candidates in the Waituna Hurdles at Feilding in Novar, Atareria, and Red Bank. Yesterday morning the first named was restricted to a couple of solid rounds on the plough, but the other pair were speeded up over the last seven furlongs of their taßk to run home from the six furlon" post in lmin 22sec. All three are well. The Aorangi Trial Plate at Feilding has attracted four from Awapuni in Rioghail, Parl, Black Acre, and Four Aces. Rioghail (K. Voitre) had the Kowhai Hack Handicap candidate, Kilorell, who had Trainer J. Kelly in the saddle,, as a companion over five furlongs which were left behind in lmin 6scc, the last three furlongs being negotiated in 41see. Rioghail,; who carries the same colours as Piuthair, has not had a great deal of racing experience. Parl was not asked to go against the watch yesterday. The chestnut has filled minor berths in hack company on occasion and a win would not be out cjf turn. Black Acre showed up for a period at both his starts at Otaki, and he is rapidly assuming racing condition, while Four Aces (Metcalf) showed a fair turn of speed in negotiating sis furlongs in company with Democratic (Reed) in lmin 18 4-ssec yesterday morning. The latter will be given an opportunity to demonstrate his pace on the flat at Feilding, the Thurnhani gelding claiming an engagement in the Kowhai Hack Handicap, a mile and a distance event.
Piuthair will make her next appearance in the Feilding Cup. Yesterday morning she did three-quarter pace work with Imperial Spark. The latter gave a glimpse of his old form at Levin, and a race might yet come his way later on. Blimp and Keddar were restricted to six furlong tasks yesterday morning, the former completing his task in lmin 19Hsec, while Keddar (Reed), who had Skyrider (Voitre) as a companion, left the distance behind in lmin 18 2-ssee.
Masher will be a runner in the Kowhai Hack Handicap at Feilding. Skyrider is also in the event. Kilorell, also engaged, was doing brilliant track work prior to the Trentham meeting only to fail on tho day and his tasks have been made easier since as a result.
Two southerners in Silver Paper and Aspiring halted at Awapuni on their way through to Feilding, where they both figure in the Flying Handicap, although Aspiring likewise stands her ground in the Stakes. With R. J. Mackie and T. Metcalf as their respective pilots yesterday the pair recorded the smartest gallop of the morning by getting to the end
of a half-mile task on the plough in SOVssec after leaving the initial furlong behind in 12 3-asec and the first two in 25 2-ssec.
Otairi, who is Awapuni's sole entrant in the Kiwitea Handicap, should not disgrace himself. Yesterday morning, with R. Reed in the saddle, he ran five furlongs alone in lmin 7see. Reed will be his pilot on the day. GENERAL. Peneus, who showed up for a period in the Flying at Levin, may be a runner on the second day at Feilding, Disrank, who filled fourth berth in the Lake Hack Handicap at Levin, does not figure on the opening day at Feilding, but may be a starter on the second day. Should the weight suit, H. Rigney will be again his pilot.
Dobbm had to forego his engagements on the second day at Otaki and Levin as the result of being kicked on the opening day at the former fixture. He has, however, now recovered sufficiently to permit of his doing light duties. Callanmore has now joined up with R. E. Hatch's pre-breakfast string and the Absurd gelding is looking very well following upon his spell. Unfortunately, his respiratory organs appear to be as faulty as ever.
J. Hastie will not be represented on the opening day at Feilding, while it is doubtful whether Rouex will fulfill his engagement on the second clay. Moutoa Treasury essayed, the Cup distance at Levin without result, although she ran quite a fair race and she has returned to her customary light tasks on the lead. Arrowhead had his training interrupted as the result of- knee trouble, but the Arrowsmith gelding has re-joined the active ranks following a brief let-up. Mister Gamp has made a re-appearance on the local tracks after a beneficial spell. The chestnut is looking very well as a result, it being apparent that his life has not been altogether one of idleness. Although restricted to trotting on the plough, the Bronzetti gelding was putting plenty of heart into his work.
Roundelay and Commentator, who are both looking in great heart, are being restricted to easy tasks, if not bein" intended to ask anything of them till Christmas time. During G. Jones's absence in Australia 11. Gordon is supervising the training operations of Mr. W. H. Gaisford's string. Gesture and Nimble, two youngsters from Mrs. M'Donald's string, who are due_ to make the trip to Auckland at Christmas time, carried out the one gallop on the outside of the course proper yesterday morning, the pair getting to the end of then? task in 53sec—the trestles being wide out. Blue Paper, from the same stable, has made a good recovery from her cold and will probably make the northern trip also. With the tracks so Hard, there was little jumping activity at Awapuni yesterday morning, Airforce and a half-brother to Ngata by All Red being the only ones to jump. The latter is on the small side, but compact, and, being a very proficient jumper, should make an excellent hunter. Streamer is now included in Mrs. MDonalds active string, but a'start will not. be made with his schooling education until the. sting is out of the ground. Adventus, who was added to the list about five weeks ago, has been again taken m hand by W. Bailey. Sporting Chance, from the same stable, is not bein? hurried, but the Lackham—Moondine fill? may be,?™ en an outing at Woodville. ■ Mrs. M Donald has taken in hand a solid looking sort by AH Red-Tit Willow, who win m due course be introduced to tho jumping ranks. She had also a Manichmeel—Te Hau gelding under her care but m_ jumping over a fence he tripped on a wire and turned a somersault. Meantime a leg injury is being viewed with concern.
There is a distinct possibility of Work°«a^V a known show rinS performer of Mrs. M'Donald's, and the winner of many cups, going overseas, an English buyer having made tempting overtures for him, although the question of size may prove to be a determining factor
