LOWER HUTT COURT
The fortnightly sitting of the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court was held yesterday before Messrs. G. A. Chapman and F. A. Feist, J.P.'s. For exceeding the speed limit in motor vehicles P. Brown was fined £2, A. S. T. Butler £1 10s, and Mrs. Tenuant and T. J. Firth each £1.
Failure to provide an efficient silencer on his motor-cycle cost Patrick W. Flanagan £1.
For driving a motor-lorry weighing more than 2 tons over the Melling bridge, S. W. Bradley was fined £3.
Mrs. M. Kirkland was fined £1 for allowing her motor-car to project over the footpath. Thomas Clendon was fined 15s for riding an unlighted bicycle at night, and Sheila Milne'los for , a similar offence. William Rogers (Mr. C. R. Barrett) proceeded against J. A. Telfar (Mr. B. Rothwell) on a charge of assault. Rogers is employed by a'milk vendor, and Telfar is a milk vendor. It was alleged that a boy assisting Rogers, at about 6 a.m. on Sunday, 22nd October,, made a remark to accused which the accused resented. An argument followed between Rogers and the accused in the course of which, it was alleged, the accused caught Rogers by the throat, and after they had fallen on the footpath placed his knee on Rogers's chest. The Bench did not consider the asault a serious one and a fine of £1 and costs £2 6s'was inflicted.
Judgment for plaintiffs by default was entered in the following undefended civil cases:—Hamer and Laurie v. R. Semple, junr., £19 9s 7d; Hamer and Laurie v. F. H. Knapp, 15s 6d; Evans Bros. v. R. S. James, £5 19s 6d; Rose Lowry v. G. Kerr, £2 8s 6d; Hutt Meat Co., Ltd., v. E. Hobman, £3 11s lOd.
