WADESTOWN PROGRESS

ASSOCIATION'S WOEK

Interest in the Wadestown and Highdand Park Progressive Association is evidently keen, as very unpleasant weather did not prevent a big attendance at the annual meeting last night. Mr. A. Stace presided. . In presenting the annual report the chairman said that as the result of continued efforts of the association the improving and widening of the main road from Park street had been undertaken, and it was expected that the paving would be commenced in February. The road was also being improved between the tram terminus and Lytton street, where it had previously been dangerous, particularly for school children.-. In this connection he made ■ special reference to the public spirit displayed by Mrs. E. Stafford and Mr. V. Styles in extending facilities to the City Council and avoiding the delay of legal procedure. The necessity for the duplication of the tram track between Park street and Grosvenbr terrace had been urged upon the City Council, and the duplication to Newman terrace would probably be carried out during the present year. In view of the heavy expenditure there was little likelihood of the duplication to Grosvenor terrace in the near future. A canvass of the district, organised by the association, had resulted in £102 8s being raised in aid of the earthquake relief fund. Mr. Stace was much impressed with the manner.in which the people had responded, particularly as they were getting nothing in return. Altogether the past year had been one of distinct progress. The streets were in a better condition than ever before, and the amount spent or authorised to be spent in the district was well-over £20,000. ■■

The balance-sheet showed that the receipts had been £12 15s 3d and the expenditure £11 5s Id, leaving a credit balance of £1 10s 2d.

The following officers were elected: — Patron, Mr. A. Fair, K.C.; president, Mr. A. R. Stone; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. Carwell-Cooke, E. Wylie, E. J. Wiffen, W. Ellis, A. Parlane, M. Dennehy, W. P. Maule, F. J. Halse, M. M. Simpson, and S. G. Nathan; hon. secretary, Mr. H. M'Cormick; hon. treasurer, Mr. E. Rhodes; committee, Messrs. H. S. Pillar, F. S. Clere,: V. M'Keown, L. H. Herd, and E. Cotterill;'hon. auditor, Mr. G. T. Withers.

Councillor R. A. Wright, M.P., chairman of the Works Committee of the City Council, gave an address on municipal affairs, with particular reference to their effect on Wadestown. He stated that in the last two and a half years more money had been spent in the district than in the previous twenty years. He congratulated the association on its strength and its keenness. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
