mony
The Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson), on behalf of the pakeha population, made a speech, stressing the', great interest taken by His Excellency an the life of the Dominion. He then presented Their Excellencies with a handsome bound volume of views of the district, and of Maori life.
Mita Taupopoki, gloriously arrayed, spoke with eloquence and force on behalf of the Arawa people, asking His Excellency to take back to • Their Majesties the loyal expressions of the Maori race. One thing they would remember in his administration was that they had given the Maoris a Maori Bishop. Chief Maera followed on in like vein. Bishop Bennett, on. behalf of the Maori race, then presented Their Excellencies with a kumete treasure bos, containing two pieces of greenstone. A splendid exhibition of poi dances and hakas was given, by the men and women.
His Excellency, in responding, stressed the .happiness that his residence in New Zealand had given him. It had been five years of supreme happiness. Addressing the Maoris he advised them never to forget their splendid tradir tions, their history, their poetry, and arts. He would like to dream of the future and see the Maori people fulfilling high positions in the professions and the State.
Great enthusiasm marked the clos ing scenes.
