RECKLESS MOTORIST

MAGISTRATE'S FAREWELL

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day.

Edwin Hex Treniaine, a commercial traveller, was charged before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday, with driving his ear in a dangerous manner on 20th

November.

It was explained by Sub-Inspector M'Carthy that the case was being taken yesterday as the defendant was sailing for England to-day. ' Tremaine denied the charge. Constable Henry, of Newmarket, said he saw Tremaine drive his car through Broadway ■at 12.30 a.m. on 20th November. ; Tremaino overtook another car at 40 miles per hour, and thcu increased his speed to at least 50 miles per hour. Early next morning while on duty in the same place witness saw Tremaine's car. It went on the wrong side of the triangle and safety zone- at 40 miles per hour, and witness flashed his torch at the driver as a signal for him. to stop. Before his car stopped it skidded 24 yards. When questioned, Tremaine asked: "Are there any speed regulations at this timo of night?"

Another constablo gave similar evidence. *

"You are going to England to morrow?" asked Mr. Hunt.

"Yes,"-answered defendant.

Mr. Hunt: "It's just as well. Tremaine admitted that he had driven on'the wrong side of the triangle, but denied he was travelling as fast as the constables' stated. Speeds of motor-cars were difficult to estimate correctly, he said.

Sub-Inspector McCarthy: "Last July you were before the Court'for negligent driving. You did 37 miles per hour on that occasion?"—" Yes." Mr. Hunt: "When are you returning from England?"—" Possibly never."

"You will be fined £2 and costs, and your licence will be endorsed. I hope you never come back. I man like you ought to be ofE the road."
