MEANEST JOKER
The police, not only in London, but in the provinces too, are searching for the person they call among themselves "the meanest joker on earth." Apparently there are more jokers than one. "He" is the man who calls out the fire brigade to mythical fires, robbing brave and hardworking men of what little rest they might have, and perhaps endangering property by occupying the attention of the brigade when a real and dangerous outbreak might occur some distance away. "He" has also been calling out the police by telephoning information with regard to the operations of imaginary burglars, telling such a scare story that officers ofi duty have been brought from their dormitories to surround buildings which housed nothing more desperate than a cat. "His" fun costs him nothing, for "he" always uses a public telephone box, whether operating in London or the provinces, and, taking advantage of the emergency facilities, demands to be connected post haste with the police or fire station. There are certain penalties for raising false alarms of fire, and the police are doing their' utmost to ensure that the guilty (party; or. parties suffer them. ,
