;• ■/ C AUCKLAND, This Day; As the result of, ah assault reported by.a young woman to have taken place at; the back of the Kemuera Library on the evening of 9th March, a young man, a labourer, named. Arthur Collins, aged 26, was arrested by detectives in Wellesley street yesterday morning. The young woman reported that she attended a dance in the Newmarket 'Borough Hall on 9th March, and met the man, who had several dances with her.. He then offered to escort her home and she accepted the offer. The pair went to Remuera, and,, when they were passing the library, the man suggested that they.Should: sit down for a few minutes. They did. 'The young woman stated that, as she was rising to her feet, the; man made a savage attack upon her, striking her heavy blows on the! face and head. She struggled to defend herself and finally broke: loose and escaped, making her way home in a weak condition.

The woman is employed by a resident of tho district, who was astounded by her appearance, the following morning. Both eyes were blackened, her mouth was cvt vand bleeding, and her face was extensively bruised.

Collins was romanded on £400 bail, which was forthcoming in two sureties, on a charge, of assault so as to cause actual bodily harm.
