ENGLISH QUOTATIONS
RAILWAY SUPPLIES
In reply-to a question this afternoon as to the suggestion that, the Bailway Department is short of coal as a result of the curtailment of supplies from Newcastle and that coal is being obtained from England, the Minister of Eailwavs (the Hon.. W. B. Taverner) said that the Department Was only affected so far as the stocks from Newcastle were concerned, which were ordinarily imported to meet the requirements of the-service. ;The Bailways used a, certain amount of Newcastle coal to mix with New Zealand coal for the firing of locomotives. It might be possible to meet the deficiency by utilising local supplies. Sin reply to,the reported statement that a consignment of coal for the Bailways was already on tho water en.route from England, the Minister said that that was not the case. The Department, however, had been obtaining quotations for supplies from the Old Country. Mr. Taverner said he expected to receive information in regard to . supplies from Australia from the General Manager of Railways (Mr. Sterling) when he returned from Australia in a few'days.
