LEARNING TO FLY
Although it ;is,less than six- weeks since the Canterbury Aero Cluy began its training, Mr. JVC. Mers*r, the club instructor,'yesterday sent two pupils off on their first solo flights. One of them, Miss Aroha Clifford, is the first clubtrained woman pilot to "go Solo" in New Zealand, and she will probably be the second woman in the; Doininion to get her "ticket:" ' The other soloist yesterdayl was Mr. E. W, Norman. Miss Clifford went 'first and made several
circuits; of the aerodrome.: Each time she came in she made a beautiful landing. . Miss Clifford was one of the first batch of; pupils who began instruction on 2nd. May. ../.Since.then, in spite of being away frbin Christehureh for some time,-she.has put in',eight hours of dual instruction Vvvith Mr., Mercer. The onlywoman who has taken a licence in New Zealand,so/far-is Mrs; Gladys Sandford, who learned to fly at Wigram Aerodrome about three.years ago. Mr. Norman: has also spent eight hours in the air doing- dual instruction.' He was the'first pupil of the club to sign the agreement form, ■ and since, then has shown :a great' .deal of keenness.
