ELECTION OF BISHOPS
POSITION IN ENGLAND
SUGGESTED SAFEGUARDS
Australian Press Association.
LONDON, 11th June. The Bishops' Committee, reporting to the Church Assembly, proposes that the Dean and Chapter of Cathedrals should have the right to refuse to elect as Bishop a person named in the King's letter, giving their; reasons in writing, though it may be open to the Crown to override their decision. At present it is a criminal offence, punishable by imprisonment; to refuse to elect the person nominated. The committee points out that in practice a Bishop is nominated by the Prime Minister, who sometimes is not a member of the Church of England,' and the present system does not afford adequate safeguards against ill-considered, appointments. The committee also proposes that before the Prime Minister advises the Crown he should consult a committee, including two Archbishops and five members of the Church Assembly, but without derogating the Prime Minister's ultimate responsibility.- '
The report will be considered at the next meeting "of the Church Assembly.
