THE OLD CONTROVERSY
WHITE V. BROWN BREAD
MEDICAL RESEARCH REPORT
Australian Pres3 Asspciatlon—United Service.
(Eeceived 12th June, noon.)
: LONDON, 11th June. 1 The old controversy of white versus brown bread is likely to be revived by a report issued by the Medical Eesearch Council containing the invgstigations of Drs. B. A. M'Cance and E ; D. Laurence, of King's College Hospital, who say that undoubtedly white flour 1 is a better source of energy, for it contains a higher percentage of starch than brown. In the latter some of the starch is replaced by cell membranes of a very indigestible type of proteins derived from bran, which do not rank m nutritional value with animal or other vegetable proteins. The laxative value of wholemeal bread is not greater than any other laxative.
