AWAPUNI TRACK NOTES

COMIVIENDATION SPEEDED UP

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post,")'

PALMERSTON N., This Day _With the Napier Park, Hawkes Bay, and Waverley Meetings looming up, Awapuni promises to be well represented .this month. Heavy rain on Monday night had left the tracks soinew.hat heavy for operations yesterday morning, but while it may have restricted the activities of the flat candidates, the jumpers were busily engaged. 1 ■ Lucky Bag (C. Brouguton) had Record Mixture (A., G. Murray) as a companion over five furlongs, but the Lucullus filly was in front throughout, and was well clear at.the,post. ■ Malahat (Murray) and Wanderlust (C. Broughton) jumped off at the seven-fur-long, post to run,the last six furlongs.on the course proper, the flags being some 18 to 20 feefr out, in lmin 24> 2-ssec. Malahat finished the stronger. Brilliant Light (R. Reed) partnered Vinella (Green) and Frisco Jack (C. Broughton) over six furlongs oa, the course proper, the newcomer having a slight advantage* over Vinella at the end of his task, which was accomplished in lmin 23see. Vinelia figures in; the Settler's Hack Handicap at, Napier Park; while Frisco Jack will be. a runner in the 'Napier Steeplechase. Although beaten for pace by the other; pair, Frisco Jack is in good order, and /was anxious to go:on .with ityester'dayij . Vinella . should likewise make a creditable showing on the trip, based' on her performance, at Otaki. .'

-■Gfaiiii'National (Larsen); and Calluna (J. Bromley), two members of Mrs. M'Donald's string, who are down to conir pete in the Moteo Hurdles and Settlers' Hack Handicap respectively at Napier Park, were sent out \to run six furlongs on the course proper. However, at the jump out Calluna broke his girth strap, and, after traversing a couple of furlongs* was pulled up. Grand National went on to complete his task in lmin 28sec. Glyn Dhu (Reed) slipped over five furlongs on the course proper in lmin 8 4-ssec. The, Kilbroney gelding is now carrying more condition than, formerly, and.looks an improved horse. Some confusion haa ariseri as the result of a similarity in names of the local representative and a Taranaki hunter who raced at the Bgmont-Wanganui fixture. When Glyn Dhu -raced at Masterton his name was mis-spelled, and .with a -horse, bearing the name of racing at Saturday's fix^ ture, many accepted it as the one and the same horse. Glyn Dhu will be given his next outing in the Meeanee Hack Handicap at Napier Park. . THE, JUMPERS.

I .■■-•■■ 'i , .- ■■". '-';"- ,-v ■■-'.■■'■ ■■.- ■" i Lieutenant Bill (S. M'Greal) and Rayonnant (A. Parker) went a couple of rounds over the big fences, the pair giving a good .exhibition^.; of,'.clean .jumping. The former, i who ■ has "been following'; * the' hounds of late, will figure with the colours up in the Petane Steeples at Napier Park. Rayonnant is an All Red gelding, who shows distinct promise for a novice. Bed .Bank (A. E. Stratton) was sent a round over the'small fence's, giving his customary display- of quick fencing. Atareria (A;'Parker) and Home Made (A. E. Stratton) likewise went a round over the battens, the' former giving animproved display. Hcime Made will be: a runner in; the Ahuriri Hurdles at Napier' Park,-while; his companion has been nominated for the Hawkes Bay Meeting. . _ Olympic (Stokes) and Corbel (M'Greal) fulfilled a similar task in. quite satisfac-tory-manner, the former acting as schoolmister. ■ Both have been out with .the hounds lately. ''"'.■. ' .. Eangi Sarto (Waller), Aurora Borealis (A. Hobson), and Askari (Stokes) ;w,ere sent over the steeplechase fences, Aurora Borealis making quite a creditable showing. She has had experience in the hunting field. Rangi Sarto will contest the Napier Steepeechase, while his stable companion may make her debut at the same fixture. Askari, who negotiated but the one round, will not be asked to race til] the Bawkes Bay Meeting.', ; Trouble (A. E: Stratton) acted as schoolmaster to Vinella (A. Parker) in an essay over the batten fence at the foot of the straight. The Warplane mare negotiated; the obstacle like a veteran, and when put at it again repeated the performance. COMMENDATION'S EFFORT. Since making his appearance in the Awapum Gold Cup Commendation has been pottering ahout the tracks, his training activities being restricted to trotting and cantering, with an occasional round at an easy pace. With R. Reed in the saddle yesterday morning, he bowled along over a round prior to speeding up over the last half-mile on the second circuit He was a little slow to begin, the first furlons- taking 15sec, but he got to the end of the second in 28% sec, and completed his full task in 54 2-ssee. It is intended to nominate Commendation at the Wellington. and Christchurch Meetings, and with the amva of the spring he should be a-^vastly better horse than what.lie was at the beginning of the present term, 'hurried PreParat!on was , somewhat JOTTINGS. TriV,7 Green-, will ride Koa<l Hog and Star Shell has returned to his old quarters as an inmate of G. New's stable. The Battle Eve gelding has not raced since De .cember but he nevertheless looks in very fair order. Incidentally, G. New is not' enjoying the best of health at prTsent I\t K-1fh 1G has T added Eoucx to his team, llie Kilbi-oney-Lady Laddo geldin" who is now. rising eight years old, is carrying a very robust, appearance at present al id tomr e aceme beforo w ready.: Tiega is still feeling the effects-of the' injury he received when Gala Day fell at Wanganui, and it has been deemed advisable to allow him to forego his engagement at Napier. Park. Mrs. Macdonald left to-day with Grand National, Calluna, Glyn Dhu, Mountain Crag, and Blue Paper and will . not return till following the Hawkes/Bay fixture. A. M'Donald and P. Adams will share the riding of the team, although P. Larsen may be found on Blue Paper at Hastings. The lastnamed is an attractive youngster by Paper Money from Blue' Lake.

' Abater M'Donald, brother of the well known horseman, who Buffered injuries to his shoulder and leg when Red Bank fell with him on the opening day at Otaki, has been discharged from hospital, but he is still confined to his. bed, the leg being still considerably swollen. In addition to the Australian Sun gelding; Brilliant Eight, J. P. Coyle has added a four-year-old filly by Bisogne from Sleeping Beauty, a three-year-old gelding by ■Acre from the same dam, .and. a rising four-year-old gelding by Warplane from a^Barto mareto his active string. He has also deceived: a rising three-year-old by Quin Abbey/but he-is out spelling after having been added to the list. : The Tea Tray—Piraeus colt owned by. Mrs. M; A. Perry, has been named Portray. Mrs. M'Donald has also received Irom the same owner a rising two-year-old half-brother by Cape Horn to Duo, while |no will also, take in hand in the near future a youngster by Cockpit from Gold -Bound. Her team is rapidly growing. Mister Gamp, who looks none the worse*

4or his trip to the Great Northern Meeting, was out on the tracks yesterday morning. With R. Reed in-the saddle the Bronzetti gelding appeared ansious to be ©yen. ..his head in a task on the ; sand. Red luchsia and Locarno, who also made the trip to Ellerslie, were likewise out, but they were restricted to easy tasks. Elicit is once agahvambng the active workers, the iilysian gelding having been working on the roads.

Roundelay and Killogje, two of the younger members of G. Jones's team, were restricted to easy tasks on No." 3 .grass. -The former, who made two very creditable showings at'-Otaki; will probably accompany Commendation to Trentham and Riccarton in the event of those trips being undertaken. , Piuthair is standing up to her work excellently, and the spring should find the Kubroney mare showing something like her old form. In an exercise outiDg yesterday morning with T. Green in the saddle; she ran a steady six furlongs on the grass in lmin 32sec without being asked to speed up.
