RECENT MURDER CASES
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—ls it not a. matter of grave concern: the number o£ murders committed in! this country, and the perpetrators thereof escape the clutches of the law? We have on record quite a number, and lest we forget, the author of these few remarks apropos same, would like to mention some of quite recent years—namely, the old couple, 'Mr. and Mrs. Hammond, down. South, Miss Scarfe (of Christchurch), Mrs. Oats (Aramoho, Wnnganui), the Chinaman, of Long Acre, Wanganui, and so far,; Elsie Walker, and there are, I believe^ one or two more, which I have forgotten* Now, Sir, it appears to mo, in view of Coroner Hunt's recent, remarks anent the inquest on Elsie Walker that there is a, growing feeling in our Police Department of "can't be bothered," and if that feeling does prevail, what is the cause? If it's, discontent then wo must expect inefficiency. If, on the other hand, it's not inefficiency, then what's wrong? Perhaps the Hon., the Minister of Justice can say, ■—I am. etc., K.G.
