DE LUXE THEATRE.
"The Exploits of the Kmdcn," showing at the I)e Luxe Theatre, deals with tlio the career of tho notorious German raider and her end on the Cocoa Islands after an attack by tho Australian cruiser Sydney. For the first time In tho history of Australia, tho Navy has been used for cinema purposes. A particularly interesting coup made by (lie Ew den during her rovlngs Is shown to advantage in oue of the many thrilling sequences lo be seen in tho film. Sho steamed into I'enang Harbour under cover of n dummy funnel mado of canvas nnd wood, and mistaken for a unit of the Allied Fleet, sho went by unchallenged. Sho torpedoed and sank v Russian warship at her moorings without warning. A Trench destroyer immediately got up anchor and bravely attackod tho raider, but with her greater gun power the Emden easily disposed of the game Uttlo craft. The Eniden Immediately got under way and was heard of no more until the Sydney caught her red-handed at tho Cocos Islands, which waa tho termination of tho German ship's notorious career on the seas. There aro Eood supports and excellent musical items. A vividly actlonful screen version of the famous novel by Count Lyof N. lolstoi,a story of Cossack life, love, and death, commences next Friday evening at the Do Luxe Theatre Wild horsemen In perilous rides, surging' battles in mountain fastnesses; the soul of the Russian Cossack, Inured to hardship and educated only to love and battle; heart-stirring encounters between .Cossack troop and fearless Turkish horde; and a love story as exquisite as any within memory— these are the ingredients of tho plcutre. 'The Cossacks" catches the spirit of the hardies fighters of all history, and indeed it should for a troop of them was brought from Europe to stage the sensational rides ami enact the people of the Uussian town ill which tho action is laid. A complete town was among the gigantic settings built for the play, with several hundred Russians living in it. Practically nil the picture was directed in Kussto, as, with the exception of the principals, tho actors spoko no English. So it might almost as well have been actually mado in Russia—and tho spirit of tho play shows it. This love story is set in the thunder of battle and the heat of adventure; niassivo hugeness of setting adds to this impression. But there is another note: the intense fanatical lovo of the old Cossack chief, played by Ernest Torrence, for his son. Gilbert is the sou, a swaggering young Cossack soldier to whom the great truths in life come in tho smoke of battlo and the agony of torture. Grim in spots, compelling in realism, tho play is none.the leas one of the most beautiful or romancos. George Hill directed tho play iv a masterly manner, from the story by Prances Marlon, and the cast includes Mary Alden, Renee Adoree, Paul Hurst tfeil Ivcely, Dale Fuller, and ethers, all splendidly cast. Hundreds of people and horses add animated masses to tho huge settings; the town, the Turkish fort, and the rugged mountain passes. It Is a story one can never forgot; a veritable epic of tho Cossack race, and one of John Gilbert's famous triumpb.3 of the screen, ilic Cossacks," which opens next Friday at the De Luxe Theatre, will bo enhanced by the lie Xuxe musical presentation—the combined artistry of tho Orchestra He Luxe and the ■vvurlitzcr orchestral unit, both under tho direction of Emanuel Aarons.
