FARMER CHARGED
ALLEGED SHEEP STEALING
! (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) IN VEECABGILL, 29th January. At a sitting of the. Magistrate's Court at Winton to-day, Charles Edward Galder, a farmer, residing near Dipton, was charged with stealing 55 sheep, valued at £110, the property of Arthur Gerrard and Sons. Tlie offence was alleged to have taken place on or about 16th October last. During the hearing of tho case a confession stated to have been signed by Calder was produced. I In this, it was stated that tho accused agreed to sell his farm and leave the district within six weeks, and to refrain from working on any land adjoining that of the Gerrard's. Detective-Sergeant Hewitt said that ho had interviewed the accused at his brother's farm on sth January, aud showed him tho signature, "C. Calder," but said he read the confession by tho light of a torch. Asked why he had signed tho confession, Calder had replied, "Gerrard is a bigger man than I." '
Accused, who pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed foT trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Invercargill. Bail was allowed in ono surety of £100.
