What is believed to be the first instance of a railroad ever being offered at pnblic auction oceuned when the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad, was spld in this manner at Butte (Montana) for 140,000,000 dollars. It also constituted- one of the largest financial transactions in the history of the United States. The purchasers were the representatives of the Kuhn Loeb Company, New York, financiers, aoid the National City Company, of New York, reorganisation managers.
