WADESTOWN PROGRESS

ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION

The annual meeting of the Wadeatown and Highland Park Progressive Association ivas held in St. Luke's schoolroom lust evening, Mr. G. Carwell Cooke presiding over a very good attendance. The annual report expressed the satisfaction of members at various advances made during the past year, among them the inauguration of a. Sunday morning tram service, and improvements in the service generally. As a result of representations made by the association, the City Council had during the year acquired a portion of the Lowe Estate, a beauty spot which would now be conserved to the people of Wadestown for. all time. Tt was necessary that the council should now. fence and bring the property into proper order. The association had made strenuous efforts to have roads and footpaths in the district improved, and though to a certain extent the efforts had been'successful, there was much more to be done. The. executive expressed the opinion that the association should endeavour to have renewed at an early date ii bus service between the tram terminus and the scenic reserve. The chairman remarked that probably as much had been achieved during the last nine* months as during the preceding nine, years. The City Council had now recognised that Wadestown was entitled to greater attention, but one work which demanded action was the provision of reasonable and well-graded access from the city, in his opinion there was nothing to prevent the formation of such a roadway, but probably faster progress would, be made if there were more picks and wheelbarrows and fewer theodolites. Wadsetown received not one penny of benefit from the 1920 £2.000,000 loan, but Wadestown paid its share of interest charges. If residents now wished to obtain a share of works expenditure they could best make progress by supporting the association and keeping at the council. The election of officers .for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —Patron, Sir Harold Beauchamp; president, Sir. G. Caxwell Cooke; vice-presidents, Messrs. S. G. Nathan, E. J. Wiffin, F. J. Halse,. W. Ellis, A. Parlane, and W. P. Maule; secretary, Mr. M. M. Simpson; treasurer, Mr. A. Parlane; auditor, Mr. G. T. Withers; committee, Messrs. C. Gray, Philp, Lisle. J. P. Salt, Stace, E. Cooke, and F. W. Grainger.
