IRISH DELICACY
MR. COSGRAVE EXPLAINS
ABSENCE FROM CEREMONY.
LONDON, 19th October. At tho Westminster Abbey unveiling ceremony, Mr. Keviu O'Higgius, Vicepresident of the Irish Executive, represented Mr. W. T. Cosgravo, the President,; who in a letter to Mr. Baldwin, had explained that the casualties of the 1916 rebellion, were not forgotten, and that his presence would reopen wounds that were not yet healecL He added: *'It is well known throughout Ireland that I myself and at least one member of .the Executive were engaged in hostilities in Dublin in 1916. Ido not wish to discuss those circumstances, which' aroused considerable feeling and bitter words. . "As regards my companions, time and tho happy .developments have ciofttrised the wounds, but some of our citizens lost brothers and sons serving in the British Army. There still remains among us, not unnaturally, a feeling of pain. I fear that my presence at the ceremonial which commemorates1 their bolovod ones might reopen wounds, bocause they may attribute to me responsibility for their bereavement." Mr. Cosgravo pointed out that a similar objection did not apply to Jfc. O'Higgins, who lost a brother in the war. ,
