A CENTRAL STATION
QUESTION OF SITE.
No finality as yet has been reached as to the site of the Central Fire Station now that fire brigade matters aro under the control of the , "Wellington Fire Board and not the City Council. Long discussion in committee yesterday by the Fire Board resulted in the passing of the following resolution:,"That the board open negotiations with the City Council relative to the taking over of the Central Fire Station or som>3 other site for the purpose of a Central Fire Station." Other matters discussed by the board included the distribution of circulars embodying advice as to what householders should do or not do to prevent the outbreak of fire on their premises. Improvements, it was suggested, could be made on the circular on the same, subject recently issued by the Department of Internal Affairs. Action is to be taken under the provisions of the Fire Brigades Act- with respect to contributors to the funds (through tho insurance companies), and certain firms who insure overseas are to be called upon to detail insurances held by them against loss by fire, and loss by fire caused by earthquakes.- The point in this connection is that persons or companies who insure overseas in companies not regularly established in New Zealand evade payment of their contribution to the cost of fire suppression, which is considered scarcely fair jto the companies operating here, who are called upon to find a heavy percentage of such cost.
