NELSON, 20th October. Un Monday morning at the Magistrate's Court Mr. T. E. Maunsell, S.M., gave his reserved decision in a case in which A. G. Betts, a motorist who was charged with driving across the intersection of Collingwood and Nile streets at a greater' speed than six miles per hour. The case was defended by the Nelson Automobile Association, several members of which gave evidence, contending that the city bylaw was unreasonable. After giving a somewhat lengthy review of the case, the Magistrate held that the bylaw was unreasonable, and accordingly invalid. The information was dismissed. "I may point out," he said, "that the result of my conclusion is not that motorists may, pending the matter being adjusted, cross intersections at any speed. They remain liable to conviction if they drive across at a speed dangerous to the public." A similar case against L. K. Jones was withdrawn. David Newport, who was charged with driving a motor-cycle without an efficient silencer and with driving at a speed dangerous to the public was fined £1 on the first charge and £3 on the second, with costs, and his license was suspended for three months. At a meeting of' the executive of the Tahuna Sands' Association on Saturday evening, Mr. Hurst Seager submitted a sketch plan of the proposed improvements to the Tahuna Sands Reserve, with detailed plans of the proposed dressing shed and cafeteria. Unanimous satisfaction was expressed with the scheme submitted, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Hurst Seager. At All Saints' Church on Sunday evening there was a very large congregation. Canon J. R. Dart was instituted Archdeacon of the Waimeas, and a number of young people were confirmed. The Bishop of Nelson conducted both services. The Archdeacon was presented to the Bishop by the Chancellor of the Diocese, Mr. T E Maunsell. Archbishop Eedwood. who is on a visit to Nelson, celebrated Mass at St. Mary's on Sunday. Mr. H. K. Hounsell, District Telegraph Engineer, Nelson, has been transferred on promotion to a similar position at Napier. The bowling season was opened at Nelson on Saturday afternoon. The official ceremony at the Nelson Club's greens was performed by the president, Mr. K. Boon, who gave a hearty welcome to visitors. Messrs. Budden (Motueka), " Newport, Richmond, and Innes (Victoria, Wellington) also spoke. The Maitai Club's opening ceremony was performed by Mr. G. E. Piper (president), who gave a welcome to many visiting bowlers. There were large attendances at both functions, and several games were played during the afternoon. The courts-of the Nelson Lawn Tennis Club were officially opened for play on Saturday by the president (Mr. C. M. Rout), the Victory Tennis Club courts by the patron (Mr. N. Kerr), the St. John's Club courts by the president (the Rev. P. N. Knight), and the Tahunanui Club courts by Mr. C. H. Chamberlain. The annual meeting of the Nelson Girl Guides Association was held in the All Saints' Schoolroom this week. Mrs. Moncrieff, provincial commissioner, presided. The_ annual report stated that the companies were keeping well up to strength. There were 86 associate members and a total strength of 310, including 212 Guides, 92 Brownies, 6 cadets, and 26 officers. The anniversary services of the Congregational Sunday School were held on Sunday last, and were largely attended. The singing of_ the children under the conductbrship of Mr. H, P. Porster was the special feature of the services. The morning service was taken by Mr. T. Vercoe and the afternoon and evening services by the Rev. H. J. Ralph.
