The pacer Great Hope has been causing J. Bryce some anxiety lately, and it has been found necessary to ease him in his work. The trouble is in one of his joints. He will not make the trip to Greymouth for the Groymouth Trotting Club's Meeting, and it is practically certain that he will not be able to fulfil his engagement in the New Zealand Trotting Cup next month. ■ The field for the Free-for-all at the Greymo'ith Trotting Club's Meeting will not be larße, but if Great Bingen, Acron, and Native Chief are included among thn starters the club's patrons will be sure of a high-class contest. P. Kiddle has Sheik looking in capital order and the manner in which he has got through his recent work has been entirely pleasing to his admirers. He is set a big task in the New Zealand Cup, but he is such a solid customer over two miles that his chance cannot be dismissed lightly. _ . Onyx continues to please in her work. She was given a spin over two miles at Addington this.week, and though she was not sent at top speed she got through her task in a very satisfactory fashion. In the meantime, she looks like standing up to her Cup preparation. Nelson Derby is going along well in his preparation for the New Zealand' Cup. He has proved a difficult horse to keep right, as he has given trouble more than once lately, but W. J. Tomkinson is hopeful that he will get to the post in his best form for the big race at Addington next month. J. J. Kennerley still has hopes of getting Pedro Pionto through £ .preparation,-
for the New Zealand Trotting Cup and other engagements at Addington next month. He is doing well on a course of swimming exercise, and he may only require an odd work-out on the track to get him fit.
A new judge's box has been built at the New Brighton Trotting Club's course, and it will be in use at the club's meeting in December. It is situated on toy of the stewards' stand, its position being similar to that of the judge's box at Riccarton. The winning post and tbo starting posts ■will have to be shifted about twelve feet.
