SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS
MARANUI LIFE-SAVING CLUB
THE BEACH MADE SAFER.
The fifteenth annual report of the Maranui Surf and Life-saving Club remarks upo* the substantial progress: made in all club activities during the past year. "The aim of the committee has been to make the club one of the foremost in the Dominion from the point of view of the efficiency of its teams, its readiness to answer emergency calls, and its prudent administration. ; The response of the club members to the appeals of the committee for assistance, in its various enterprises has been good, and it is sincerely hoped that the same spirit will be evident in the coming season. In addition to minor rescues made by individual members during the season several sensational rescues were made during the New Year. There is, no doubt that tragedies were averted by the arrival of the club teams." A look-out had been maintained from the club tower on all week-ends and holidays during the seasonj and an emergency team and the surf boat had been ready for any call. The finances of the club, the report states, are fairly satisfactory, but no reduction of the mortgage on club property had been made during the season. The running expenses of the club were increasing greatly each year. Donations had fallen since last year, but that was compensated by the large number of debentures that had been handed back to the club. The total receipts from subscriptions were less : than last year, and many subscriptions were outstanding, •The good work of the Social Committee, recently strengthened by the addition of several ladies, is remarked upon. . The report places on record, the details of the rescues performed on 3rd and sth January. ■* The question of the new property had been, exercising the minds of the committee during the season. Owing to other heavy expenses it had beenimpossible to reduce the mortgage, but it was hoped that the property would be free from debt after the coming carnival. The question of erecting a clubhouse would have shortly to be considered. . The total membership of the club stands at 117. Nineteen new members were elected during the season, and nine members who made no effort to qualify for the bronze medallion were struck off the roll. The total of 117 is an increase of 29 on the previous year, but the senior active members have decreased by seyen. The wisdom of the previous committee in introducing junior members had been amply proved, the majority of the boys taking a keen interest in life-saving, several of them having already qualified for the Bronze Medallion of the Koyal Life,-saving Society.
