INDIVIDUAL OUTPUT OF RUSSIAN WORKERS.
According to "Industrial and Labour Information," the weekly publication of the International Labour Office, Mr. Kaplun, Chief of the Labour Protection Department of the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics, in a report presented to the Central Council of Russian Trade Unions In June, states that overtime is widespread, in spite of the fact that there are more than a million registered unemployed; the weekly rest is frequently not observed; and the number of accidents, fatal and nonfatal, is steadily growing, on account of "inattention," lack of safety appliances, and inefficient organisation. The picture thus officially presented of conditions of work in Russia confirms accounts of the situation which have been given in recent months at a series of trade union con-, presses. • There is evidence that metal workers, building workers, rnilwaymcn, miners, and textile workers are dissatisfied with existing conditions. Complaints are made on. the score of overwork, inadequacy of wages, lack of housing accommodation, absence of safety measures, defective equipment, and insufficiency of Inspection.
