PRICE FIXING

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I am one of many who think Jt _at quite time something was done to stabihee prices in order that the legitimate tradei; may be able to scure a fair margin of profit on the goods he sels. Price cutting __) order to secure the other grocer's customers is no good to anybody. What would be the result if all the grocers __opted - the same tactics? It would mean that in a short time half of them would be bank" rupt. The reason that the cut-rate stored are able to keep going is because of the extra customers they get through cutting. This would be nullified if all the oth__; grocers cut the prices too, but then there would be no profits for any of them. A certain number of the public recognise thie and refuse to patronise the cut-rater at the expense of the other retailer. As thing* are at present one or two cut-rate firmare seeking to establish a monopoly, not for the benefit of the public, but their own. gains. The little man who cannot afford to buy in big quantities and get the extra discounts allowed is b*ir.£ -forced: to put up his shutters. The cut-rater in .man* cases sells at less than some.of the email traders can buy wholesale. Surely it' M time that the manufacturer stepped in and had a say in the price at which.certain articles are to be retailed.—l am, etc.; J.R.R 20th October.
