BAPTIST CONFERENCE

CRUSADE AGAINST WAR

OBJECTION TO APPOINTMENT.

(By Telegraph.) ' (Special to "The Evening i»ost.") DUNEDIN, This Day. The Baptist Conference elected' the Rev. Eric Evans (Dunedin) vice-presi-dent. The Rev. M. P. N. Lascelles was re-elected secretary and- treasurer. In response to an invitation from the Federal Council of the U.S.A. Churches and the World Alliance for the Promotion of International Peace Through the Churches, the conference declared itself in deepest sympathy with these organisations in the declaration that war was the world's most tragic evil, and believed it was the urgent duty of the churches to lead the people in a great crusade against war. When the Rev. J. K. Archer (Christchurch) was nominated for appointment to the executive, Mr. Bardsley (Dunedin) rose and objected with heat to the appointment of a man, who, he said, had ridiculed the conference at a public meeting. The president ruled that Mr. Bardsley was out of order, and the Rev. J. J. North said that it was only fair that such remarks should be made in Mr. Archer's presence, not while he was absent from the conference. Mr. Bardsley said that he would have made his statement even if Mr. Archer had been present.
