SWOLLEN RIVERS
MANAWATU DISTRICT AFFECTED.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N. f 7th Sept. Tho steady rainfall yesterday afternoon and torrential downpour during the night have had an appreciable effect upon the rivers and creeks in the district. The Mangaone is considerably swollen, and is running within two feet of its banks, while the Oroua and Pohangina Rivers rose considerably. The flood waters from the Mangaone Stream backed up tho drain running along the Boundary road, which has suffered considerably in the recent floods. At 10.30 o'clock the gauge at Fitzherbert Bridge was reading six feet, and the water was then rising. Reports from the Gorge state that the river had risen considerably during the night. Surface water is to be seen lying in large sheets in the paddocks not far from Rongotea and on parts of Rowe's and Hammond's tho lines are covered by some six inches of water. The weather has improved considerably this afternoon, and there seems now no likelihood of the repetition of the disastrous floods of a few weeks ago.
