THE SUNKEN EGYPT
DIVERS IN DEPTHS OF THE SEA
VESSEL SEEN, BUT NOT BEACHED.
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) PAEIS,' 7th September.
Though the divers' attempts to sal. vage the sunken steamer Egypt have so far beea unsuccessful, they went down 400 feet, which is a record depth for operations in the open sea.
The hull of the Egypt appeared like a great dark wall, but a submarine current prevented the divers from approaching nearer. Their descent occupied 12 minutes, and one diver was below over two hours. When hauled up he said his impression was that he was entering a dark cave, but when Ms eyes became accustomed to the dim lights of the ocean depths he could distinguish, objects at a distance of 40 feet.
The divers were in telephonic communication with the salvage tug all the time they were below.. They will resume their exploration at the end of the week.
