MB. A. T. MARKMAN APPOINTED,
A London cable message announces tho appointment of Mr.- A. T. Markman, Secretary Post and Telegraph Department,-New Zealand, to the position of Manager Pacific .Cable Board. New Zealand.
The position is one which has been created in view of the extended activities consequent upon the duplication of. the cable, which will be completed in November next, at a cost of over £2,000,000. ..The Pacific cable, which is owned by the Governments of Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and Now Zealand, was laid and opened for traffic in 1902, and since its inception has been known as the All Bed Route. The Pacific. Cable Board, London, offered tho position of first manager in New Zealand to Mr. Markman, who, as stated in the London message, has accepted the appointment. Mr. Markman will take over his new duties on Ist November.
Mr. Markman joined the Post and Telegraph Department at Blenheim in 1890. He was subsequently' attached for some time to' the mailroom staff, and was • afterwards appointed telegraphist at Wellington. Later he was selected1 for a clerkship in the General Post Oifice, under the late William Gray, 1.5.0., and. since then has occupied various positions in the Head Office. For several years ho was Superintendent of Staff. In 1909, ho was elected by the-officers of the Depart-, ment to represent them on the Public, Service Superannuation Board. In 1913, when the control of the Public Service was taken over by the Public
Service Commissioner, Mr. Markman was attached to the Commissioner's staff for a period of over twelve months. When the position of Chief Clerk in the General Post Office became vacant in 1916 Mi\ Markman was appointed to '• the position. On tho appointment of Mr. B. B. Morris as Secretary in 1920, Mr. Markman was appointed to tho position of First Assistant Secretary. During. Mr. Morris's absence at the Postal Conference I a t Madrid in 1920 Mr. Markman acted as Secretary, and in June, 1923, was promoted Secretary of tho Post and Telegraph Department. Mr. Markman is not tho first officer of the N.Z. Post and Telegraph Department to become attached to tho Pacific Cable Board's staff. Mr. C. L. Hcrtslot, who was senior telegraphist at Greymouth, joined tho board's service as the first superintendent at Doubtless Bay when tho cable was .opened for traffic in 1902. Mr. Hertslet is 'now on the retired list and is a resident, of Auckland. Mr. J. Coote, ex-New Zealand telegraphist, is now holding an executive position in tho general manager's office at Sydney. Several other ex-postal officials are in the.board's employ.
