NAVY LEAGUE
NEW EXECUTIVE MEETS.
"'■ The"-first meeting of the newly-elected. Executive Committee of the Wellington branch of the Navy League took place yesterday afternoon, Sir Alexander Roberts presiding. At the outset, the president congratulated Mr. R. D. D. Maclean, who had been awarded the special service decoration of the league, a distinction bestowed upon very few supporters of the league. He also congratulated those members who had been elected to positions on the executive for the first time. Sir Alexander Roberts was unanimously elected chairman of the executive. The following sub-committees were set up for the ensuing year, with power to add, the chairman and the secretary (Mr. E. Darroch) to be ex officio members of all committees: —Finance, Messrs. A. H. Hollis, E. W. Hunt, F. H. Irwin, G. Sutcliffe, and A. F. Wiren; education, Mrs. Darling, Mrs. C. Earle, Miss Edwin, Mrs. L. O; H. Tripp, Messrs. W. W. Bird, .T. Crawford, Captain Olphert, and Mr. A. W. Walker; . policy, Dr. Anson, Lieut-Com-mander Carter, Messrs. J. H. Fowler, and jR. D. D. Maclean, Captain Olphert, and Commander Varian; entertainment, the members of the executive, the Ladies' Auxiliary Committee, and the committee of the girls' branch. . The chairman urged that a permanent secretary and organiser should be appointed to take charge of the Wellington branch. It had been felt previously that Mr. Darroeh was the only man for such a position, but his appointment with theEducation Department had prevented him from accepting. However, Mr. Darroch would probably be retiring on superannuation at the end of-this year, and the chairman considered that he should be retained as a permanent secretary. The following motion was carried unanimously:— "That the question of offering the appointment of permanent secretary to Mr. Darroch at the beginning of nest year be referred to the Finance Committee, to report as to whether they can find ways and means of bringing this about, and that it be a recommendation from this executive that they give the matter their most earnest consideration." : ;
