The : Canadian Official Press Bureau fcnnounces, (the "Glasgow Herald'" :srt^)ott«) that during January a total of 1 276 families, representing 612 souls, 'took up free grants of land in "Western I Canada. This was an increase of ,43 Jon the corresponding period of last | Jrear. A. free grant consists of ,160 ■i acres,' and is made on payment of an « entry fee of . £2. Every/ person who ?is the sole head ;of a family, and every ijman who has reached the age of eighteen and is a British subject, or de- (| Wares his intention to-become a Brit--5 isH subject, is eligible. The settler must i erect a habitable house and live in: it least six months in each of three J years, at the end, of which he. must •have broken up at least 30 acres, with >20. acres in crop. He.is then,given his • absolute title to the homestead.. During J January this year such . titles' were given _to 486 persons, representing 570;896 acres, compared with 375 and lßi,osT respectively in the-correspondine ; month of 1925.
