HUSBAND DROWNED
COMPENSATION GRANTED,
The echo of. a. tragedy of the sea was heard in' the Arbitration Court yesterday afternoon, when Lilian Bertha Carney claimed £750 from Richardson and Co., Ltd., steamship owners. Her husband had been a seaman on the steamer Pakura, and on 10th June of last year he lost his life by drowning. The crew was landing cargo at Akitio by means of a surf boat, which was swamped by a heavy sea, and Carney, who could not swim, was drowned. The body was never recovered. ' The facts of the case were not in dispute, Court proceedings being necessary to substantiate ' the claims of the plaintiff, who is now 'in England. Mr. P. J. O'Regan appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. G. Gr. Watson f°l" *^c defendant company, and his Honour Mr. Justice Frazer was on the Bench. A sum of £750 was claimed, with such further relief as the Court might deem fit to grant. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £750, with twelve guineas costs, against the defendant company, arrangements being made to administer the money for the benefit of the two young children.
