"BROADENING OUT"
INTERLUDE IN COFBT.
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Pott.")
CHRISTCHUBOH, This Day. A little banter was indulged in by the Bench, the Probation Officer, and the Chief Detective at the Magistrate's Court to-day, during the hearing of a case in which a well-grown youth of 16 years pleaded guilty to the theft of a ring, valued at £7. It was stated that the youth had stolen the ring from a house he was visiting, and had pawned The Eev. Frank Eule (Senior Probation Officer),. speaking to Mr. Young, S.M., said he thought the youth should be dealt with in the Children's Court. Then, if put on probation, he would be under the child welfare officer. He was too young to associate with those Mr. Eule dealt with. The Magistrate: "Then, should children under the child welfare officer mix with well-grown boys of sixteen and seventeen? Some are much more matured at sixteen than others. This one does not look like a child. He is at work.'' Chief-Detective Gibson: "He is no child. He stole the ring to take a young woman to the, pictures, yet he is only sixteen." Mr. Eule: "Under the Probation Act, I have to regulate the associates, both male and female, of those in my charge. It is difficult for an old parson to regulate the male and female company of young men." Mr. Young: "You should not bo sensitive about it. It will broaden your theology." The Chief Detective: "He has broadened out a lot since he has been here."Mr. Kule: "Well, I've been here twenty years." He added that ho thought the case was one for three years' probation. The Bench adopted that recommendation and ordered the suppression of the name. '
