AMATEUR ATHLETICS
NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL MEETS
ROSE RETURNS THIS MONTH.
The monthly meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last evening, Mr. R. W.. M'Villy presiding;
Mr. E. Guy, manager of the New Zealand team which competed at the New Zealand and Australian championships at Brisbane last month, submitted a report on the trip and details of expenditure. The chairman remarked that the New Zealand team, considering the small number of competitors, did remarkably well at the championships. The secretary of the New Zealand Olympic Games Association wrote asking for the names of athletes who, at the present time, are considered to-be up to Olympic standard, and for the names of those who at present display promise of developing to Olympic standard by 1928. Mr. Guy said that S. Lay on his performances at the Brisbane meeting was fully deserving of recognition. _ Cabot, the walker, was not at his best in Australia, but he was a man of distinct promise.
It was decided to forward the names of Lay and R. A. Rose as athletes considered to be up to Olympic standard. The various centres are to be asked to supply the names of men' who show promise of developing to Olympic standard by 1928.
The question of arranging a suitable reception to Messrs. R. A. Rose and J. M'Holm on their return to Wellington by the Tahiti on 28th September was left in the hands of the Itinerary Committee.
It was decided to hold the annual meeting of the council on the third Monday in November. Several proposals from the Wellington Centre with regard to the New Zealand championships will then be under review.
