WELL-KNOWN JOCKEY DEAD
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NAPIER, 6th September. The death occurred to-night of Rangi Thompson, the well-known cross-country horseman.
Although at the time of his decease Rangi Thompson had definitely retired from the ranks of jockeys in favour of training, he was best known as a dashing cross-country rider. He made his kst appearance in a jumping race on Master Peter in the Grand National Steeplechase at lliccarton last mouth. In June he won the Great Northern Steeplechase on Dick, this being his last notable success. He rode his first winner over fences on Gold Dust, more than 20 years ago, and from that date he had had a continued record of success, combined with the mishaps and hard knocks common to the lot of the cross-country jockey. His two Grand National winneri were St. Elmn and Pari-
tutu. Although runner-up on several occaßions he had not scored in the Grand National Hurdle Race. He was acting as trainer for the Native owner, Mr. H. Tupaea at the time of his death,'
