STATE PENITENTIARY
BURNT THROUGH ACT OF
CONVICT,
(United Press 'Association. —Copyright.) VANCOUVER, 4th Sept. Seattle telegrams report that the main building of the Washington State Penitentiary at Wallawalla, including the cells, was destroyed by fire, which raged yesterday afternoon and all night till extinguished early this morning. During tho night one thousand convicts were kept under a guard of State militia in the recreation grounds of the prison. Tho fire originated through a convict hurling a bnrning object into a ventilating fan. Tho guards this morning foiled an attempt to start a second blaze in an automobile license plate factory attached to the penitentiary.
