CIVIL SERVICE MATCH

AUSTRALIANS BATTING

TAYLOR MAKES A DOUBLE CENTURY. (United Presa Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, 4th September. The Australians to-day commenced a two days' match against a Civil Service Association team, at Chiswick. The Australians had first strike, and when stumps were drawn they had scored 440 for eight wickets. A notable feature j of the day's play was a double century scored by Taylor. It is interesting to note that the home team is captained by R. Collins, brother of the Australian skipper, H. L. Collins. The weather at the opening was bright and hot, but the wicket was wet and easy until the sun's influence was felt, when it began to cut up considerably. The attendance was small. The following are the teams: — Australia: H. L. Collins (captain), W. H. Ponsford, J. M. Taylor, H. L. Hendry, A. A. Mailey, J. S. Ryder, W. M. Woodfull, A. Richardson, J..L. Ellis, C. Everett, and C. V. Grimmott. , Civil Service: R. Collins (captain), Cook, Rippon, Musson, Webb, Bennett, Ross, Chapman, Sharland, T. Knight, and Tasker. R. Collins, won the toss and sent the Australians in to bat. Play in the early stages was not inspiring, thoughthe bowling, on the dead wicket, and despite frequent changes, was not difficult. Taylor played himself in, and then flogged the bowling, using a great variety of strokes. He gave one chance, when at 150, Sharland dropping a skier sent up off Chapman. Finally Taylor was caught at long-on after batting for 4 hours 35 minutes, during which time he hit twenty^one 4 's. Everett slogged the tired bowling. Hendry was in a few minutes and then strained his side and retired. The following are the detailed scores: AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
