AT AWAPUNI
HUNT CUP TO AOTEAROA
TAME FOX WINS KAIRANGA HANDICAP.
The weather could hardly have been improved upon for the annual meeting of the Manawatu Hunt Club held at Awapuni on Saturday. The attendance was very fair, all things considered, although it appeared rather thin in the ample enclosures of the Manawatu Racing "Club. Totalisator investments were £11,111, compared with £10,583 last year, when the meeting was held at Feilding. The tracks and grounds were looking at their best for this season, and the racing track itself was in excellent order. The racing was first-class, a number of the events providing close and thr. '-■; finishes. Proceedings opened with .-, three-horse race, in which Mr. J. Morris.; horsemanship won the event for Home Made. Had the rider named been on Mountain Crag, that horse would have won easily. TE MATAI TRIAL PLATE. There were a number of three-year-olds in this race, and two finished in the places in Volplane and White Ringlet. Volplane began very smartly, and led all the way. He was a little lucky to beat the four-year-old filly Mountain Star, who Was unfortunate at the barrier. White Ringlet, who finished third, is a three-year-old filly by Some Boy 11. from Winning Lady. She is a newcomer and ran well. Comedic, another three-year-old, looked rather too burly and should be a better horse next time out. Rising Star, who finished third, is a'four-year-old gelding by Bisogne from a Daystar mare. He is a possible maiden plate winner in not too select company. HUNT CUP. Aotearoa, the winner, is an aaed gelding by Hallowmas from Vivaudelf Ho has been some time developing the form he has shown in his last three races, but now he might go on and do something in better company than that of Saturday, when he quite outclassed his opponents. Birkenose, even though second, gave a Korry exhibition, and Adrienne did not fence at all well. Suweilah, as usual, was fencing recklessly when, he came to grief. AOKAUTERE HACK FLYING. In his early races Royal Game has shown speed, but failed to stay, but at I'eilding and again at Awapuni on Saturday he ran out six furlongs in great style. He is a good beginner, and it looks as,if that enthusiast, Mr. W. H. Ballinger, has got hold of a useful hack sprinter in the three-year-old son of Royal Stag. Lin Arlington showed some of his old form, but he was of no use to Royal Game at the end. Our Jack was under pressure all the way down the straight, but a moderate third was his best. It was a very simple type of race, for the horses occupied practically the same relative positions from the barrier viso to the winningpost. PARORANGI HACK STEEPLECHASE. Donoghue, a rank outsider, showed the way in the early stages to Hats Off, Ho* kioi, and Oneroa, while Ohorere and To Pai ran off at the first fence. Oneroa and Donoghue and Labour Morn and Hokioi raced in pairs over the middle mile, and then Labour Morn went up to One"roa, while Donoghue had had enough, . Woden having run off. Oneroa went over en to Labour Morn at the last fence, and crowded him in the run to the post, but Labour Morn would not be denied, and won by a head from Oneroa. Hokioi, who covered much less ground in the run-in, was half a length away third, with Donoghue, Sometime, and Hats Off following at intervals. Labour Morn has decided possibilities as a jumper, and he is
a game customer into the bargain. Hokioi might have been closer up but for a bad jump about half a mile from home. KAIRANGA OPEN HANDICAP. Easily the best field of the day paraded for this race, in which Novar, Rascal, and Beaumont were evenly backed, and there was a fair amount of support for Tame Fox. Gurnion, Renmure, Rascal, and Beaumont were the leading division for the first six furlongs from Miss Hupana, Merry Day, Opa, and Novar. Benmuro and Merry Day both struck trouble racing round the turn, but Benmure quickly extricated himself, and as they turned for home Benmure, Tame Fox (who had made a fast forward move) and Beaumont showed the way to Opa and Rascal. Tame Fox went on and won by half a length from the fast-finishing Merry Day, with Beaumont a head away third. Benmure, Noyar, and Rascal were next. Tame Fox put up a good performance, quite in keeping with the form he showed at Feilding. Merry Day was unlucky, for she finished at a great rate. It looked as if she should have won. Beajtmont was beaten by the distance, but Benmure ran a really good race all things considered. Rascal hung out all the way, a trait that was noticed at Trentham". Novar should soon do better than this. RAUMAI HUNTERS' HURDLES. Hallowmorn was first out and the first time passing the stand he was showing the way to Mount C/yde, Rapiii, Ayun Kara, and Rangisarto. Along the back, Hallowmorn, Ayun Kara, and Mount Clyde were racing together, but ac-oss top Rangisarto commenced to move up. _ The two first named were into the straight first, but inside the distance Rangisarto challenged and failed to get up by two lengths. Mount Clyde was a neck away third, and Rapiti last. Rangisarto was disappointing. ". FLAXBOURNE HANDICAP. Penman, who was a steady tip, was iavounto, but there was nearly as much support for Our Jack. Molto 'began best and led down the back well clear of Inner Harbour, Penman, Takaroa, and Lin -VrJmgton. The leader was stopping as they raced to* the turn, and when in line for home. Lin Arlington was up level, t! P™man- Inner Harbour, Mountain Jean, Takaroa, Our Jack, and Mister Gamp next Lin Arlington looked a sure winner until pur Jack and Mister Gamp came fast, the three passing ovei the me in very close order. After some dl lay the judge hoisted the final placing f± 1U Mister Gamp, and oSr Jack. Penman was fourth and Molto & fii"f JeaS' 3 n.d, I"n«- -^'bour next. inthedaV.
