NOT BARBARIANS.

Another false statement is that the Druses take no prisoners. This ■would lead the rest of the world to believe that the Druses are a barbarian race of desert savages. It is well know^i throughout the Near-East that the Druses are a race superior to nearly all other Arab peoples—of higher type, of higher ideals, and of higher intelligence. I have met many of them in Syria and Egypt, and all are charming. Many have attended the American University at Beyrout, and few there are of the better class who do not speak either English or French—usually both. While they are great warriors, they are a race of courteous and kindly people, with a profound admiration in their hearts for Great Britain and all her works. The Druses have taken many hundreds of prisoners from the French forces. These prisoners are at present confined in the Druse villages of the Hauran. Tour Sennegalese soldiers actually are working to-day a3 servants in the house of Fadl Alia Pasha Huneidy, in his village. The Druses are willing to have these statements investigated.
