ACQUIRING INDUSTRIOUS HABITS The native churches on Sunday are I exceedingly well attended. Tho sing- J ing,, which is a most striking feature of these services, is characterised by rich harmony. Usually a woman's voice takes "the main part, with a highpitched tone, and the other voices form an accompaniment, the whole effect being exceedingly rich and melodious. The food of the whites on the island is derived in large measure from New Zealand. The only meat that is obtainable is frozen. It is imported from the, Dominion and kept in freezing chambers on the island, being disposed of daily as required. There are no animals on the island to kill for food, except the native pigs. To a New Zealander it is most interesting to observe that all the animals on the island from the cow and horse down to the hens and tho ducks

live on. coconuts and oranges. It is even said that the native hens do not know what wheat is and refuse to eat it if it is given to them. There are two poisonous creatures on the island —a centipede of from three to four inches in, r length; and a scorpion; but these are not common, and seem to do very little harm of any kind. There is no native bird on the island; the only birds that are common being tho niynah, introduced to deal with certain insect pests harmful to fruit crops, and they have proved effective in dealing -with these pests.
