NOTES OF A RECENT VISIT
PROGRESS OF FRUIT TRADE
MATTERS .EDUCATIONAL.
Mr. J. A. Valentine, who recently retired from the position of senior inspector of schools, Taranaki, has just returned from a visit to the Cook Islands. Mr. Valentine on this trip -was officially engaged in an investigation into matters education in the group. Last year the Cook Islands Department instituted a forward movement in connection with education, and the Superintendent of Schools, Mr. H. Binstead, was appointed to supervise education in the Islands, and he has been there for the best part of the year. Mr.. Valentine went there, at the request of the Department to inquire into the working of the new scheme. He left Wellington on the 20th July, and spent a full month in the group. Most of his time was spent on tho island of Rarotonga itself;"but he also viait'ed, by one of the fruit schooners, four of the outlying islands, namely, Atiu, Ma.uke, Mitiaro, and Mangaia. These ' are ' islands lying from 110 to 150 miles from Rarotonga, and on each, except Mitiaro, schools exist which are run by the Cook Islands Department.
